Handy rule

Atrios responds to the ongoing cartoon debacle:

On the other hand, "don't be an asshole" about peoples' religious beliefs when they aren't trying to impose them on you seems to be reasonably good etiquette.

Seems about right.

Anything to raise tensions between Europe and the Islamic world is music to the ears of the neocons. What a nice convenient episode to help the US cause.

"if he insults you with a comic on the right page, let him insult you with a comic on the left..."

so if one threatens with angry mobs and death, censorship is ok?
but its okay, if you know you won't be threatened with mobs and death?
seems a little hypocritical

finally, just curious if the ACLU is going to extend the Danish a hand?

I think that the Danish and other European papers have a clear right to publish whatever they want, and that such a right ought to be defended.

However, there's a difference between defending that right and thinking that the way the cartoonist practiced it was a smart thing to do. You have the freedom to act like a dick, but that doesn't mean you should.

finally, I think the "A" in ACLU suggests that they might not feel obliged to help, and also the fact that they're lawyers and not riot police makes them less than useful to the danes right now. No one is mounting a legal challenge to freedom of the press (as far as I've heard), but reacting with violence (also stupid).
